Sorry for the slow response. Maybe you already made up your mind. 
In a search of 1.9.5:

| tr class="formcolor" | Found 236 occurrence(s) in 28 files |
so maybe shifting all to td would be the least work.
There's not many .formcolor selectors in the themes anyway, it seems, so they would be fast to adjust.
